  • 27、This may be the 21st century but when it comes to information communication technology(ICT), the gender(性别)divide between boys and girls, shows no sign of closing.

This is bad news for the ICT industry where men outnumber women by over five to one; the industry needs at least an extra million recruits(新成员)over the next five years. Obviously, women as well as men are going to have to fill these recruitment gaps(空缺).The ICT companies are worried about the shortage of men and women to fill their gaps in the future.

It is believed that women are very well suited to working in ICT-they enjoy working in teams and like looking for creative connections. Many women have the kind of personal skills which are considered important to develop “new technology”. Professionals who work in Information Technology are constantly creating the world around us, and this can’t be done if you don’t know how people work and how they play.

In spite of the fact that ICT jobs are well paid and women are more likely to do well in them, findings show that girls’ opinions of the industry are uniformly negative. Only 5% would consider entering the ICT industry compared to 14% for law and 26% for medicine. Up to the age of 11 girls see ICT as entertaining and interesting but after that age negativity sets in; by the age of 13,this negative view of ICT is confirmed.

After school activities encourage some girls to use Information Technology, and getting ICT staff and other teachers together helps to develop imaginative use of ICT. Imaginative use of ICT especially in music, art, drama, geography and media studies, all helps to open girls’ eyes to the fact that careers in computing can cut across so many different areas.

Students complete the same class task by rote(死记硬背)in the ICT class. Although girls follow successfully, they will achieve enjoyment and excellence if allowed to diversify and be creative. For girls, just pressing buttons is not enough.

Another method is setting up computer clubs aimed at younger girls aged 8 to 14. This is known to inspire girIs to develop their ICT skills and to show them that ICT can be both creative and interesting.

We can’t afford to have girls missing out.

【1】What do we know about ICT?

A.It has a serious division between male and female.

B.The ICT companies don’t need to hire more workers.

C.ICT is a more promising career than the cause of law.

D.ICT attracts more women to join in because of its high salary.

【2】Why are women more suitable for ICT?

A.Because of their high skills of studying.

B.Because of their creativity of new games.

C.Because their responsibility for their career.

D.Because of their spirit for teamwork and exploration.

【3】What will make girls more interested in ICT?

A.Completing the class task by rote in the ICT class.

    B.Making competitions in ICT class.

    C.Developing imaginative use of ICT.

    D.Connecting ICT to their scores.

【4】What’s the main idea of this passage?

A.The ICT will have a promising future.

B.Some measures to attract girls into ICT.

C.The advantages of ICT over medicine.

D.The differences between ICT and law.

  • 28、In today’s information age, it’s nearly impossible to avoid using social media. According to USA Today, even American universities are increasingly using social media as a learning tool. Their goal is to teach students how to use social media professionally.

Jade Johnson is taking an upper-level advertising course at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. For the class, he has had to organize and promote a contest via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, channels that are commonly used by advertising firms.

“A lot of times students prefer not to use certain social media, but are forced because of the class,” says Jade.

Some students may be unwilling to create an account, but Jade says that it was helpful because social media skills mean better job opportunities in today’s world.

More college classes are appearing that are designed specially to teach students about social media, offering them a different look into something they may use on a daily basis.

Jenna Kapsis, a senior at William Paterson University, was required to post two Tweets on Twitter and one update on Facebook per week in her Digital and Social Media Communication class. The course had a specific Facebook page where students would create discussion groups and post links.

“Some of the topics included social media manners, online marketing and current events,” Kapsis says.

As technology continues to develop, colleges and universities will likely continue to find ways to combine it into their teaching. Whether it’s to create discussion groups, carry out plans, or communicate with students, professors are ensuring that students can see the potential(潜力,潜能)of mastering social media platforms.

【1】According to Jade Johnson, what’s the benefit of social media skills ?

A.Increasing the possibility of finding good jobs.

B.Bettering the communication between teachers and students.

    A.Carrying out plans.

    B.Doing some experiments.

    C.Creating discussion groups.

    D.Communicating with students.

【3】Why do the US university focus on the promotion of social media skills ?

A.Because it can strengthen the universities’ competitiveness.

B.Because it will improve the universities’ teaching quality.

C.Because it will help professors carry out researches more easily.

D.Because it will be of great importance in this high-tech society.

【4】Which of the following is true according to the passage ?

A.Most students are unwilling to use social media.

B.Social media skills are hard for students to master.

  • 29、   For even the most sharp-eyed ornithologists (鸟类学家), a small bird can look much like another. But luckily, researchers have built an artificial intelligence (AD) model. “Our study provides the means of overcoming one of the greatest limitations on the study of wild birds—reliably recognizing individuals.” said Andre Ferreira, lead author of the study.

Ferreira began exploring AI’s potential while in South Africa, where he studied the sociable weaver, a bird which works with others to build the world’s largest nest. Ferreira wanted to understand each individual’s contribution to building the nest, but it was hard through direct observation because they were often hiding in trees or building parts of the nest out of sight. This experience contributed to his building the AI model, which could recognize individual birds simply from a photograph of their backs while they were busy with nest-building.

The model must be trained with thousands of labeled images in order to accurately identify individuals, but acquiring labeled photographs of birds is very difficult. Ferreira and other researchers finally overcame this challenge. They built feeders with camera traps and sensors. Most birds in the study populations already carried a tag (标签) similar to microchips which are put in cats and dogs. Antennae (天线) on the bird feeders read the identity of the bird from these tags and touched off the cameras.

According to Ferreira, the use of the Al model could save on expensive fieldwork and spare researchers from procedures such as catching and marking animals. “It removes the need for the human to be a data collector, so researchers can spend more time thinking about the questions instead of collecting the data,” said Ferreira.

The AI model is currently only able to re-identify individuals that have been shown to it before. The researchers are now trying to build more powerful AI models that can identify larger study groups of birds, and distinguish individuals even if the AI models have never seen them before. This would enable new individuals without tags to be recorded by the cameras and recognized by the computers.

【1】Which of the following may trouble ornithologists most when studying wild birds?

    A.Tracking birds closely.

    B.Locating birds quickly.

    C.Identifying birds accurately.

    D.Marking birds without hurting them.

【2】Why does the author mention Ferreira’s work experience in South Africa?

A.To explain the significance of studying wild birds.

B.To introduce the living habits of sociable weavers

C.To inform us of the great potential of the AI model.

D.To show the reason for developing the AI model.

【3】What does “this challenge” mentioned in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Attaching a tag to each bird.

    B.Obtaining labeled images of birds.

C.Touching off camera traps and sensors.

D.Training AI model to identify individual birds.

【4】What can we learn about the AI model in the last paragraph?

A.It has been adopted in longer-term studies.

B.It needs improvement to identify more birds.

C.It has helped record new birds without tags.

D.It shows great potential in recognizing new birds.

My father is a practical man. He can’t explain calculus (微积分) , but he can tell you how much pressure boiler needs. He put himself through night school to become an engineer, but that was only after he worked as an electrician and a mechanic.

One day we walked by a toy store window. Sitting in the corner was the most unusual dollhouse (玩具屋) I’d ever seen. It was shaped like an upturned log.

“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Claus will bring it to me?”

Dad looked at the $100 price tag—an exorbitant (过高的) figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn’t afford this house,” he joked, hiking up his belt as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart.”

On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the dim (昏暗的) light, I made out some wrapped boxes under the tree—but none large enough to contain my dollhouse. Dad could see my disappointment. He pulled me onto his lap and gently told me how, as a boy, he had wanted a red wagon, but his father couldn’t afford one. He said he made his own from wood and old wheels he found. “I’ll make one for you,” Dad promised me.

And right after Christmas, despite all the unfinished projects at home, he started it. I had thought it was an easy toy to make, but every step of the long process was more complex (复杂的) than I had expected. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the log house. In the dim light, dad was always busy creating my dollhouse.
