26、 On a farm in England, Gavin and Alice Munro are taking sustainability to the next level: they harvest trees which they grow into chairs.
The couple have a furniture(家具) farm in Derbyshire where they are growing 250 chairs, 100 lamps and 50 tables. It is their answer to what they see as the inefficient(无效率) process of cutting down mature trees to create furniture.
“Instead of force-growing a tree for 50 years and then cutting it down and making it into smaller and smaller bits ... the idea is to grow the tree into the shape that you want directly. It’s like a kind of 3D printing,” said Gavin.
Part of the inspiration for the idea came when Gavin was a young boy. He spotted an overgrown bonsai tree (盆栽) which looked like a chair.
The 44-year-old began experimenting in 2006. In 2012, Gavin and Alice set up the company Full Grown. Within several years, the couple developed the most effective way to shape a tree without limiting its growth. They guide shoots (嫩枝) already heading in the right direction, rather than force them the wrong way against their natural growth.
The average chair takes six to nine years to grow - and another year to dry out. The labor and time involved in producing the organic pieces means they do not come cheap. Chairs sell for£10,000 each, lamps for £900 to £2,300 and tables for £2,500 to £12,500.
【1】What is special about the farm?
A.It uses 3D printing. B.It grows bonsai trees.
C.It was set up by a couple. D.It grows trees into furniture.

A.By limiting its growth.
B.By following its natural growth.
C.By forcing it against its natural growth.
D.By guiding its shoots in the right direction.
【3】How long does it take to make an average chair for the company?
A.Over 50 years. B.About 6 to 9 years.
C.At most 6 years. D.About 7 to 10 years.
【4】Which can best describe the furniture?
A.Big and eco-friendly. B.Natural but expensive.
C.Hand-made and creative. D.Traditional but organic.
【5】What does the writer's opinion on the farm?
A.It’s brought in huge money. B.It grows trees inefficiently.
C.It’s a good try of sustainability. D.It will gain popularity soon.
27、Five hundred years ago, Europeans arrived on a new continent. They brought new cultures and languages to this place which they called America. However, there were already people living here who had their own cultures and languages, so a terrible part of history began.
As more Europeans arrived, there was a fight with the Native Americans for the land and by the end of the nineteenth century, the native tribes were moved to reservations. A lot of their children were taken away to boarding schools and taught to speak English. By the end of the twentieth century, more than half of Native Americans were living in cities. They gave up speaking their old tribal language and only used English. As a result, many Native American languages disappeared, and with them, their culture.
Some Native American languages are still used today, but they are usually spoken by the older members of the tribes who still live on the reservations. For most of the younger members of the tribe, the everyday language is English.
The good news is that some of these “last speakers” are keeping their culture and language alive. They are also receiving help from the National Geographic Society’s Enduring Voices Project which aims to keep languages around the world from dying out. Linguists and experts meet with these “last speakers”, interview them, and record video, pictures, and audio of them. The “last speakers” tell old stories which are written down in English so people can learn more about the culture.
Recording the language and culture is only part of the project. The next stage is to pass on the language to the next generation. Some children pick it up from their parents or grandparents, but many tribes now offer courses. The Salish tribe is an excellent example. They live on Montana’s Flathead Reservation and their language is spoken by about 50 people over the age of 75 and no one under 50. So the tribe has set up a school. It has 30 students aged two to twelve during the day and offers courses for adults in the evening. Schools and projects like these hopefully will save languages for the future.
【1】What’s the purpose of the author by mentioning Europeans’ arrival?
A.To tell a terrible part of history in America.
B.To state the native tribes’ being moved away.
C.To explain a fight with the Native Americans.
D.To introduce Native languages’ disappearance.
【2】Why is English common for the young members of tribes?
A.They are forced to speak.
B.They hate native languages.
C.They have a gap with the old.
D.They consider English popular.
【3】What’s attitude of the author to keeping tribes’ languages alive?
A.Negative.
B.Objective.
C.Supportive.
D.Uninterested.
【4】What directly drives the Salish school founded?
A.The aging situation of “last speakers“.
B.The record of their language and culture.
C.The children and adults’ strong desire.
D.The distance and poverty of their reservation.
28、Microplastic pollution is increasing dramatically around the globe, according to a study of airborne (空气传播的) plastic particles (粒子).
People are already known to breathe, drink and eat microplastics, and research suggests that pollution levels will continue to rise rapidly. The researchers said that breathing in these particles can damage lung tissue and lead to serious diseases.
Professor Natalie Mahowald, at Cornell University in the US and part of the research team, said, “But maybe we could solve this before it becomes a huge problem, if we manage our plastics better, before they accumulate (积聚) in the environment and move around quickly everywhere.”
The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined airborne microplastics, which have been far less studied than plastic in oceans and rivers.
The team gathered more than 300 samples of airborne microplastics from 11 sites across the western US. These were the basis for atmospheric modeling that estimated (估计) the contribution from different sources, and was the first such study to do so.
They found that roads were the main factor in the western US, linked to about 85 percent of the microplastics in the air. These are likely to include particles from tires on vehicles, and plastics from litter that had been broken down.
The researchers enlarged their modeling work to a global level and this suggested that while roads are also likely to be the main driver of airborne plastics in Europe, South America and Australia, plastic particles blown up from fields may be a much bigger factor in Africa and Asia.
Professor Andreas Stohl of the University of Vienna’s Faculty of Earth Sciences, and not part of the study team, said, “The study confirms the global-scale nature of microplastic transport in the atmosphere and does a good job in highlighting highly relevant and concerning possibilities, but more measurement data is needed to get a better idea of the sources.”
【1】What did the researchers find out about airborne plastic pollution?
A.Its impact varies on different continents.
B.Public transportation takes responsibility for it.
C.Its main driver differs across continents.
D.Africa is suffering the most from the pollution.
【2】According to Professor Andreas Stohl, what is the next step of the study?
A.To predict the possible damages of microplastics.

D.To improve the method of collecting samples of microplastics.
