26、Of all the crazy Spanish festivals, none is wilder than the Carnival celebrations in late February. Carnival is thought to come from the Roman festival, the Saturnalia, where participants had much drinking and dancing. Carnival in Spain is celebrated nationwide though the craziest festivities are in the Tenerife and Cadiz. While each town has its own unique way of celebration, they are both devoted to having a good time. In these main towns during Carnival it seems that no one sleeps as the drinking and dancing go on from dusk till dawn. You’ll see beautiful costumes and people in masks everywhere, and you’ll have a lot more fun joining in the masquerades(化装舞会)than just watching.
The Carnival in the Tenerife is possibly the biggest party held in Europe and the one most like the famous Carnival of Rio. One of the most popular events of the Carnival in Tenerife is the choosing of the Queen of Carnival. Keep in mind that you need tickets for many of the competitions. But if you can’t get tickets you can still head to the open air parties. The celebrations take place in the whole city, and everyone is eager to have a good time.
Off the southern coast of Spain, you’ll find a different sort of Carnival in Cadiz. While it’s a match for the Carnival in Tenerife in terms of fun and partying, the Carnival in Cadiz is special for its music. The crowded streets are full of musical groups, mostly singing mocking songs. The people in Cadiz are known to have the best sense of humor in Spain, and the music of Carnival reflects this. 27、A group of Canadian kids are already spreading a bit of Christmas spirit in Halifax, Nova Scotia, by wrapping (裹) warm clothing around lamp poles (杆、柱) for the city’s homeless to pick up and use. The sight of warmly dressed poles caught recently the attention of locals, who stopped to click pictures to share on social media.
Every year, Tara Atkins collects warm clothing from her community, in order to give to the less fortunate. This year, she took to Facebook to call, for donations and the response was strong-their front porch (门厅) was filled with bags of clothes. Since the family was traveling to Halifax on November 15 with their daughter Jayda and seven of her friends to celebrate her 8th birthday, Tara decided it was the perfect time to teach the children a valuable life lesson.
The kids spent time handing out coats to any homeless they met on the streets and tied the rest around lamp posts for others to pick up. According to Tara, the experience helped the children better understand the difficult situation of homeless people having to confront the serious winter on the streets.
There is no way to be sure that the coats left hanging on street posts were actually picked up by the homeless, but Tara says she isn’t too worried about that. By next morning, all the jackets and scarves on the posts were gone. Photographs of the inspiring project have been shared about 8,000 times on Facebook, and got over 10,000 likes. Tara, who did something similar in Toronto in December last year, says she’s already planning next year’s coat drive. She’s hoping to spread the word well ahead of time, so more people can contribute. And she also wants to add $5 fast food gift cards so the recipients (接受者) can also enjoy a hot meal. “We’ve had help from others when we were in need, and we knew how great it made us feel,” said Zachary Atkins, Tara’s husband.

28、When Ariel Cordova-Rojas rode her bike to Jamaicia Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. Bingo!
A mile into her walk, she spotted a beautiful female mute swan (疣鼻天鹅) near the water’s edge. Cordova-Rojas, 30, who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund recovery center in Manhattan, knew that mute swans can be battle some. But as she approached this one, it didn’t move. She was certain that the bird needed medical attention. Cordova-Rojas placed her jacket over the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and held it in her arms. And then a thought struck her: What do I do now?
Her best bet was the recovery center, but that was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way? Luckily, some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station. She worried others might be disturbed. However, on the subway, no one seemed particularly fazed by the feathered passenger. One guy, says Cordova-Rojas, was “sitting right in front of me on his phone. I don’t know if he noticed there was a swan in front of him”.
Cordova-Rojas called the recovery center, and Tristan Higgin-botham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove bird, bike, and the rescuer to the facility. There, staff members determined that the swan might have lead poisoning.
The staff got the swan back up on her feet. She even made a boyfriend at the center — another injured swan. Sadly, even with all that tender loving care, the swan fell ill with a bacterial infection. Two months after Cordova-Roias came to her rescue, she passed away.
It’s a disappointing ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the big city-literally. In all, Cordova-Rojas traveled two hours by foot, car, and subway (with her bike). “That’s the perfect summary of who she is,” says Higginbotham.
【1】How did Cordova-Rojas know the swan was in trouble?

29、For nearly three decades, we have waited anxiously for an effective drug that could defeat Alzheimer’s disease. We believed we had identified the root cause behind this debilitating condition: sticky clumps of the protein beta-amyloid (β淀粉样蛋白) in the brain. Even as drug after drug homing in on this target failed to make a difference to symptoms, we continued to pour more money into the effort.
Regrettably, it is now becoming clear that this time could have been better spent zooming out (缩放) from beta-amyloid, to look at the big picture of possible Alzheimer’s causes.
Doing so reveals a far more complicated and dangerous illness. It seems to be a condition that doesn’t have a lone underlying trigger, but instead results from multiple overlapping processes and risk factors.
By thinking of Alzheimer’s in the same way as we do varied conditions like heart disease, researchers are now combining knowledge from across disciplines to identify, and tackle, the many known risk factors.
This new approach comes not a moment too soon, because 10 million new cases of dementia (痴呆) are diagnosed globally each year. The vast majority of these, between 60 and 70 per cent, are Alzheimer’s disease. As people are living longer than ever, the number of people living with dementia is predicted to almost double every 20 years.
Accepting that Alzheimer’s is more complicated than we thought might seem disheartening. And yet, targeting the many factors implicated in the disease, including the role of infections, diet, sleep habits and inflammation, puts at least some control back in our own hands, because these are things we can all do something about. It means we don’t have to simply wait for pharmaceutical companies to deliver: we can also cut our own chances of getting dementia.
Tunnel vision has held us back for too long. With this new approach, a single effective drug might well be out of the picture, but instead, there is a real possibility that we could dismantle Alzheimer’s by a thousand tiny cuts.
