  • 27、I watched my Dad close the door. It was a really cold night in dead silence and I was all alone at home. My parents left because they had been running fever for several days and they were showing other symptoms of COVID-19. It was the 9th day of Wuhan lockdown (封锁) starting on January 23.

The virus we now know as COVID-19 is somehow frightening partly because it seems that it may infect anyone. But that is only partly true. All the proof suggests that it can be cruel to older people, so I was wondering whether my parents would make it and whether we would ever take family photos, which my parents and I had talked about during the Spring Festival holiday.

On their second day away my parents called and asked me how I was. We talked using FaceTime, and the moment I saw mom lying there with an oxygen mask (氧气罩) and my dad could not talk without breathing heavily, I realized that I had to live on my own.

But two weeks later, I had a fever and had to go into quarantine (隔离) and be put under medical observations for 14 days. Fortunately, my illness turned out to be due to a bacterial infections (感染) but not COVID-19.

The doctors and nurses would work a whole day preparing for new patients and seemed extremely sorry for not having everything that was needed. Most of the patients were really understanding, but of course there were those who were not, and complained loudly, but all the doctors and nurses tried their best to deal with it in a calming way. And they are all from other cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou, and some of them are just three or four years older than me.

When the quarantine was over, every patient thanked the workers for what they had done, but the answer they received was exactly the same: “That’s what we’re here for.”

  • 29、   My name is Eivind Trodden, I'm 42 years old and on Svalbard in the North Pole. My background was originally software engineering, and years later 1 decided to go ahead and get my pilot license. This year I wanted to try- my hands at technology and got a job at Svatsat, the northernmost Satellite(卫星)Ground Station in the world. Now  I work as a pilot and an operations engineer.

Originally, I moved here for the job. This was the first pilot job I got. After a while, I was attracted by the place, and right now the most important thing for me is to live here.

It is wonderful full of differences. The polar night is balanced with the midnight sun. Here the year is much like a day. The winter is night. In the morning there is ice, snow and then spring. Then there is the endless day of summer, and finally, the town settles in with the sunset of autumn.

The summer is the most difficult. It is harder to create darkness than light. You have to have good blinds on your bedroom windows. A good trick is to create your own evening. I like to close the blinds and sit down in relative darkness with a good book or a movie before I go to bed.

The dark season is the favorite of many people living here. There are fewer tourists, and people have a chance to get together and be social after the busy summer. You have to be self-controlled though, and not start lighting candles in the middle of the day. Don't underestimate(低估)the cost of living here. You need a large number of tools to experience Svalbard to the fullest.

1Eivind Trodden’s present work is probably connected with .

    A.training the pilots B.software engineering

C.researching the coldest place D.satellite controlling technology

2What made the author settle in the North Pole?

A.Simple lifestyle. B.His love for the place.

C.Better living conditions. D.Chances to get a job.

3Why do people living there like winter most?

A.There are less rules to follow.

B.There are no tourists to disturb them.

C.They have spare time to relax.

D.They needn't light candles any longer.

4Which can be used to describe the life in Ground Station?

A.Great and different. B.Long but exciting.

C.Colorful and moving. D.Busy but boring.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Every year, Vargas and her dad go hiking. This summer’s trip was up Table Rock in the Grand Tentons in early December.

Vargas was just below the 11, 000-foot peak with her dad waiting about a mile down the trail when she met an injured English springer spaniel. She couldn’t find the dog’s owner and she figured it would be easier for her to carry the dog to safety.

“I had to crawl under him to get him up on my shoulders,”said Vargas, a single mother of three children from Idaho. “I felt the difficulty of it right away. I never felt 55 pounds like that before.”

Her dad, Ted Kasper, who took some photos when he saw his daughter coming down the trail with a dog on her shoulders. Dad laughed and said, “Isn’t this hike hard enough? You must carry a dog too?” Vargas recalled. “My dad made me laugh. He is such a great man.”

That sense of humor helped Vargas get through the difficulty of carrying the heavy dog down the trail. The hiking was hard and nearly unbearable at times. Every time Vargas put him down so she could rest, it was difficult. And every time she got down on her knees to put her head under his belly and tried to use neck and body strength to lift him, she was painful and it was hard.

“I thought we would see people on the trail on the way down to help. But that wasn’t the case.” she said. Kasper offered to run down the trail and try to find help, but Vargas didn’t want to be left alone.

About halfway down the trail, Vargas thought she might not be able to continue. At the time, it started to rain. “The thought of stopping crossed my mind once. My legs hurt and were shaking. My dad’s jokes made me laugh and it gave me energy. And feeling the dog’s breath growing faint was what encouraged me to continue,” she said.

Finally hiking six miles and reaching the bottom of the trail, Vargas found a very small note that said, “Lost dog named Boomer, call this number.”

    注意:
