  • 27、Half a year ago, Lacey Scott was shopping for supplies at a local pet store in Kansas City, Missouri. When she was in that location, a bored face of a little goldfish attracted her attention, and she didn’t stop staring at it the entire time she was there.

Lying at the bottom of a dark fish tank, the sad fish didn’t appear to have much of a wish to survive. Lacey learned from a store clerk that the fish was ten years old and had spent a long time in that depressing tank.

“I couldn’t take my mind off him. I couldn’t bear the thought of a fish who had wasted so much of its life and would end up dying in a pet store,” Lacey said.

Lacey approached the store owner and asked if she could take the small fish home with her.

What no one realized was that the small fish’s best days were still to come: all it needed was a second chance.

Lacey returned home and built a pond out of various materials for the fish she named “Monstro”. She changed his water every day to keep it clean and fresh, and fed him with only the fish food. Monstro, on the other hand, did not appear to be enjoying his new living environment, not even moving to have his meal.

Despite this, Lacey did not give up on him and continued to provide him with specialized care. “I found him swimming for small amounts of time after a month,” Lacey said. “And it was at that point that I realized things began to change.”

Monstro’s body began to change as well. The gray scales (鱼鳞) that made him seem unwell began to change colors. His small body began to shine, showing that his condition had improved greatly.

Lacey put Monstro into a much larger tank once he had fully recovered, where he continues to live in the greatest possible way.

【1】Why did the goldfish at the pet store catch Lacey Scott’s attention?

A.He was a rare type of goldfish.

B.He looked sad and was tired of life.

C.He looked energetic, colorful and lovely.

D.He was so old that he could hardly move.

【2】How was the fish when he just arrived at Lacey’s home?

A.He tried to jump out of the pond.

B.He adapted to his new life very quickly.

C.He seemed not to be fond of his new home.

D.He appeared to be dead and floated on the surface.

【3】When did Lacey start to find Monstro’s change?

A.The fish began to swim in the pond.

B.The fish started to eat a lot of food.

C.The fish’s scales began to change colors.

D.The fish came to the surface to breathe.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.A goldfish bought by a woman recovers from his injury.

B.A woman builds a new pond for an active goldfish.

C.A kind woman saves a goldfish from being killed.

D.A goldfish adopted by a woman starts a new life.

  • 28、David Brown is known as the world’s fastest completely blind runner. He had Kawasaki disease at 15 months old, which led him to completely lose his sight by age 13.

Brown says he was “living in fear for a number of years” until he discovered his passion (热情) for running. He attended the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. It was at that time that he knew he wanted to compete himself.

Paralympic runners train and compete alongside sighted guides. At the Rio Games in 2016, Brown and his partner Jerome Avery ran 10.99 in the men’s 100-meter dash, taking home the gold.

Brown made his way to running from another sport. He explains that he lost his left eye when he was 3, and lost vision in his right eye over time. He played basketball as a kid, but was increasingly getting injured because he couldn’t see the ball coming. “I took the opportunity to run on the playground, and realized I had some speed there,” he says.

He pursued (追求) running at the Missouri School for the Blind. Brown started at the school when he was 11, and it was there that he really started running track.

He got to his first Paralympic games by writing about running. Brown was one of the 2 winners of an essay (散文) contest that got to attend the event in Beijing. He says he wrote about how he used sports to overcome difficulty.

It’s important to be in sync with (与……一致) your running partner. His new partner Steward says he doesn’t have to slow down when running with Brown, because he’s fast. A 10- or 11-second race doesn’t require much speaking. Steward says, except for the occasional cues (暗示).

It’s also an honor, Brown says. He notes that Paralympic runners can’t do what they do without guides like Steward, who could run alone but choose not to. He calls it “a great honor”.

【1】What made David Brown decide to compete?

    A.Playing basketball.

    B.Winning an Olympic medal.

    C.Attending the 2008 Olympics.

    D.Attending the Missouri School.

【2】What led to David Brown’s decision to run?

    A.His personal interest.

    B.His physical condition.

    C.His family’s suggestion.

    D.His success in playing basketball.

【3】What do we know about David Brown’s essay?

    A.It was encouraging.

B.It was about how to prevent diseases.

C.It was about skills of writing essays.

D.It was the best of all.

【4】Which can best describe David Brown’s story?

A.Helping others benefits yourself as well.

    B.Love me, love my dog.

C.Where there is a will, there is a way.

D.Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

  • 29、About 10 million undocumented immigrants live in the U.S. They are not registered with authorities and therefore often hide from the government. They do not pay taxes, and they cannot apply for driver’s licenses, jobs that require a work permit, or loans to buy houses. If discovered, they can be sent back to their home countries.

But this week, the U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether to allow some undocumented immigrants to stay for a limited period and apply to work legally. The decision will affect only undocumented immigrants who meet three criteria: those who have not been found guilty of a crime; those who have been in the U.S. for the past five years or more; and those who have a child who was born here or lives here legally. About 4 million undocumented immigrants meet those criteria.

The case has much to do with a program called DAPA. It stands for “Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents.” The program was approved two years ago. One of the goals of the program was to keep families together. It also aimed to bring more people into legal work. People who support DAPA say the program can greatly reduce the fear undocumented immigrants feel.

A six-year-old girl named Sophie Cruz spoke outside the Supreme Court building. She was born in the U.S., but her parents are here without documents. That means the government can force her parents to leave the country – and their daughter—at any time. “I ask the judges to protect us children and all immigrants,” Sophie Cruz said.

If the Supreme Court decides the DAPA program is legal, the government will protect approved undocumented immigrants. They will receive a social security card, permission to work in the U.S., and a promise that they will not be forced to leave for three years.

【1】At present, the undocumented immigrants' life in America is ________.

    A.respectable

    B.stylish

    C.plain

    D.insecure

【2】What can we infer from paragraph 2?

A.All undocumented immigrants will benefit from the possible decision.

B.Undocumented immigrants meeting the criteria can live legally for ever.

C.Many a undocumented immigrant will get benefit from the decision.

D.There seems to be little chance to have the important decision made.

【3】The program called DAPA will contribute to ________.

    A.the increase of panic

    B.the stability of society

    C.more job opportunities

    D.academic performance

【4】How will Sophie Cruz react once the decision is announced?

A.She is sure to feel relieved.

B.She will decide a permanent stay.

    C.She will join the program.

D.She is to obtain a security card.
