26、 You may not like it, but learning English is absolutely necessary if you want to succeed abroad. Not just that, you have to show your knowledge of the English language on one of the two major English proficiency(精通) tests: the IELTS or the TOEFL.
Which test you should take depends on your goal. The TOEFL remains the top exam in the U.S. But the IELTS is gaining ground in the U.S. and it has already been the preferred test in the U.K. and Australia. There are also differences in the test themselves. They both measure the four main language requirements: speaking, reading, writing and listening. However, the tests are very different in their forms and methodology. “Compared with the TOEFL, the IELTS test requires you to actually have a grasp of the language and ability to use it, rather than simply being well prepared for the test,” explained IELTS examiner Julian Fisher.
The key reasons for this are that the IELTS test requires fill-in answers besides multiple choice(选择题), and its speaking section is done with a real examiner instead of a computer. “The face-to-face interview with a trained speaker of English allows for real-life communication, which shows real academic(学业的) and workplace situations, ” said senior exam marketing officer Pang Shuai.
What scores do I need? For the IELTS, a band score of 5 to 7 is fine for the majority of undergraduate and post-graduate programs. For top schools, you will probably need at least a 7. When it comes to the TOEFL , there is a range. It all depends on the colleges. Ordinary schools will let you get by with a score as low as 60. For a top-tier university, on the other hand, you will need to score upward of 100 points on your TOEFL.
【1】What does Paragraph 2 suggest?
A.The TOEFL score is preferred in Australian universities.
B.Universities in the U.K. mainly see students’ IELTS scores.
C.The IELTS is more widely accepted than the TOEFL by US. School.
D.In the U.S., the TOEFL score is not as important as it once was.
【2】Which of the following is a difference between the TOEFL and the IELTS?
A.There are no fill-in answers in the TOEFL tests.
B.The IELTS tests focus more on test-taking skills.
C.The IELTS interviews test-takers on the computer.
D.The TOEFL checks four English skills, while the IELTS doesn’t.
【3】What does Pang Shuai think of the face-to-face interview?
A.More exams should take this exam form.
B.It is helpful in one’s studies and at work.
C.This exam form can make test-takers more relaxed.
D.A test-taker can score high simply by preparing well.
【4】Which of the following is correct if you want to go to a top university in the U.K. or U.S.?
A.A 7 on the IELTS is probably a must.
B.A score of 60 on the TOEFL is enough.
C.You should take both the TOEFL and the IELTS.
D.You need a 7.5 on the IELTS for post-graduate programs.
27、How to Memorize a Long Text in the Shortest Time
If you’ve ever tried to memorize a long text, you are likely to just repeat the sentences over and over again. 【1】 Instead, using memorization techniques that suit your learning style can make a difference.
Divide the text into separate parts. 【2】 Use it to divide the text into smaller parts. Your parts won’t necessarily agree with whole paragraphs. Instead, each of them should discuss a single idea, Now that you’ve found your parts, start one by one until you can memorize it without looking at the text.
【3】 Add the melody (旋律) of a song to the text to make it easier for you to remember. Choose a familiar melody or your. favorite song that you can fit the text into. It doesn’t matter whether the words of text sound strange, as long as you can make it work as a song.
Record your reading the text if you’re an auditory (听觉型的) learner. An auditory learner can more easily store things to memory by listening to them over and over again. If that’s you, then the most effective way for you to memorize a text is by hearing it. Record your reading the text you want to memorize, so you can listen to it. 【4】
Memorize the first letter of each word of the text to create a shortcut (捷径). The ability to memorize something sometimes means the ability to recall the information in your memory. To exercise your ability to recall, make a new page with only the first letter of each sentence in the text. 【5】
A.Then try to recall the text using only those first letters.
B.Turn the words into a song to help you remember them.
C.The act of speaking and listening may improve your memory.
D.However, this isn’t necessarily the quickest way in short time.
E.Look for words that you won’t have to work hard to memorize.
F.Once you go through the text, you may know its general structure.
G.It’s time to put them together so you can memorize the whole text.
28、There are numerous reasons why people don’t take First Aid training programs. 【1】 Or they think that accidents happen to other people, not to them or their friends, family and colleagues. But if you ask any individual who has already taken a first aid training program if it was worth it, their answer will be “Yes!” Having some basic first aid knowledge is essential and here are the reasons.
【2】
Having a basic first aid knowledge means that you’ll be confident in your skills and abilities in relation to first aid administration. By taking first aid training, it helps you to reflect on yourself and how you and others react in certain situations. Having this understanding will boost your confidence in a wide range of non-medical day-to-day situations.
It does more than help save lives.
It’s true that having first aid training undoubtedly helps save lives. 【3】 Giving appropriate first aid immediately can also help to reduce a person’s recovery time and make the difference between the patient having a temporary (短暂的) disability and a long term disability.
It enables you to increase patients’ comfort.
Not all accidents, injuries or illnesses require a trip to the hospital but it doesn’t mean they don’t cause pain and suffering to the patient. 【4】 By knowing how to act — even just by employing simple techniques such as applying an ice pack correctly, you’ll help to relieve his discomfort.
It gives you tools to prevent the situation from becoming worse.
By being able to provide basic care you can stabilize a patient until emergency medical services arrive. You’ll learn how to use basic household items as tools to cope with many situations. You’ll also be trained in how to collect information and data about what happened and the patients’ condition. This information will be passed on to the emergency services, which saves them time. 【5】
A.They are too busy.
B.However, that’s not all.
C.It helps you become confident.
D.It creates the confidence to give first aid.
E.You will be a valuable link in the chain of survival.
F.You must look after yourself and ensure your own safety.
G.A child who is crying because of a sprained ankle is suffering.
29、In any theatrical performance the actors are just a small part of the people needed.
Once the play has been decided by the director, the actors must be chosen. This is done by casting, a very skillful and important occupation. The actors will create a success or a failure out of a production. They have to be right for the part they will play, and also work well with the director.
Production planning is the next important step. The style of the play is confirmed (确定) and then a small model of the different rooms on stage (the sets) is created. It will be important that the sets can be taken down and rebuilt easily as the production may be moved to different theatres.
Detailed drawings of each set are produced and the Workshop, Paintshop and Props Department go to work. The Props Department is responsible for some of the stage furniture plus the extra items which the actor will need while they are on stage.
The Costume Designer decides how all the actors will be dressed. This includes shoes, hats, costumes, jewels. Costume makers have fittings with the actors to get the costume sizes right for the whole cast. Wigs (假发) and make-up are dealt with by another set of experts.
It is the Stage Planning team who schedule rehearsals (排练) and decisions made here will affect how the production is organized.
The Stage Department is responsible for making sure that everything at the theatre is in place and working properly. Before the play is performed, they will have a technical run of the performance in which the Lighting and Sound team work to create the right effects.
Few realize how many people are behind the scenes every time the curtain rises at the theatre!
