二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things: they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle, compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine (常规) work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, and how to know what they know or do not know.

【1】According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by ________.

    A.listening to skilled people’s advice

    B.asking older people many questions

C.making mistakes and having them corrected

    D.doing what other people do

【2】Which of the following does the writer think teachers should NOT do?

    A.Give children correct answers.

    B.Allow children to make mistakes.

C.Point out children’s mistakes to them.

D.Let children mark their own work.

【3】According to the writer, teachers in school should ________.

A.allow children to learn from each other

B.point out children’s mistakes whenever found

    C.give children more book knowledge

D.correct children’s mistakes as soon as possible

【4】The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are ________.

    A.different from learning other skills

    B.the same as learning skills

    C.more important than other skills

    D.not really important skills

    #ChefsChallenge!

Love cooking? Join famous chefs with this online challenge—cook, have fun and share your best healthy recipes!

When it comes to food, it’s difficult to match East Asia & Pacific in terms of variety and tastiness. From wontons to dumplings, from spicy fish to noodle soups, East Asia & Pacific’s amazing food culture is a central part of life for millions of people and indeed tourists from across the world.

However, changes in diet and lifestyle in recent years have sadly destroyed traditional food cultures, and the health of millions of people. Cheap “fast food” and unhealthy snacks that are high in sugar, salt and fat are now all too common but offer little nutrition.

    A new challenge

Today, there are more than 25 million of malnourished children living in the region, but the picture is changing. While the number of stunted (发育不良) children is slowly falling in many countries, overweight and obesity are growing, and at a much faster rate.

In many countries, three forms of malnutrition—undernutrition, hidden hunger and overweight-co-exist. A family may have an overweight mother and a stunted child. Or a child may be both stunted or too short and overweight. Unhealthy diets are a major cause of all forms of malnutrition.

    Join us!

One way to slow this tide is to reconnect families and young people with food. That’s why chefs from across the region are taking part in the #ChefsChallenge, asking you to show off your cooking skills. Get involved today by sharing your recipes with videos, photos or any other creative ways on social media using #ChefsChallenge and tagging UNICEF East Asia Pacific on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

【1】What has badly affected the traditional food culture in East Asia & Pacific?

    A.Western cooks’ arriving.

    B.People’s turning to unhealthy food.

    C.Tourists’ bringing new recipes.

    D.Overweight children’s growing in number.

【2】What can we infer about “a malnourished child”?

A.He is in a poor state of health.

B.He is shorter than other kids.

    C.He has an overweight parent.

    D.He prefers eating at home.

【3】What is the purpose of “#ChefsChallenge”?

A.To introduce excellent Asian cooks online.

B.To help ordinary people challenge professional cooks.

C.To reconnect people with tasty and nutritious food.

D.To encourage family and friends to get together online.

  • 28、   Body language, especially gestures, varies among cultures. For example, a nod of the head means “yes” to most of us. 1 Likewise, a sign for OK, forming a circle with our forefinger and thumb, means zero in France and money in Japan. 2

Folded arms signal pride in Finland, but disrespect in Fiji. The number of bows that the Japanese exchange on greeting each other, as well as the length and the depth of the bows, signals the social status each party feels towards each other.

Italians might think you’re bored unless you use a lot of gestures during discussions. Many Americanmen sit with their legs crossed with one ankle resting over the opposite knee. 3

Likewise, Americans consider eye contact very important, often not trusting someone who is afraid to look at you in the eye. But in Japan and many Latin American countries, keeping the eyes lowered is a sign of respect. 4

A.To look a partner full in the eye is considered a sign of ill-breeding and is felt to be annoying.

B.As is known to all, eyes are the window the soul.

C.However, this would be considered an insult in Muslim countries, where one will never show the sole of the foot to a guest.

D.But in Bulgaria and Greece a nod means “no” and a shake of the head means “yes”.

E.Waving or pointing to an Arab business person would be considered rude because that is how Arabs call their dogs over.

F.However, whatever cultures you are exposed to, bear in mind that when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

  • 29、   In 1784, five years before he became president of the United States, George Washington, 52, was nearly toothless. So he hired a dentist to transplant nine teeth into his jaw – having taken them from the mouths of his slaves.

That’s a far different image from the cherry-tree-chopping George most people remember from their history books. But recently, many historians have begun to focus on the roles slavery played in the lives of the founding generation. They have been spurred in part by DNA evidence made available in 1998, which almost certainly proved Thomas Jefferson had fathered at least one child with his slave Sally Hemings. And only over the past 30 years have scholars examined history from the bottom up. Works of several historians reveal (揭示)the moral compromises (妥协)made by the nation’s early leaders and the fragile nature of the country’s infancy. More significantly, they argue that many of the Founding Fathers knew slavery was wrong – and yet most did little to fight it.

More than anything, the historians say, the founders were hampered (妨碍)by the culture of their time. While Washington and Jefferson privately expressed hatred (仇恨)for slavery, they also understood that it was part of the political and economic foundation of the country they helped to create.

For one thing, the South could not afford to part with its slaves. Owning slaves was “like having a large bank account,” says Wiencek, author of An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America. The southern states would not have signed the Constitution (宪法)without protections for the “peculiar institution,” including a clause that counted a slave as three fifths of a man for purposes of congressional representation.

And the statesmen’s political lives depended on slavery. The three-fifths formula handed Jefferson his narrow victory in the presidential election of 1800 by inflating (膨胀)the votes of the southern states in the Electoral College. Once in office, Jefferson extended slavery with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803; the new land was carved into 13 states, including three slave states.

Still, Jefferson freed Hemings’s children – though not Hemings herself or his approximately 150 other slaves. Washington, who had begun to believe that all men were created equal after observing the bravery of the black soldiers during the Revolutionary War, overcame the strong opposition of his relatives to grant his slaves their freedom in his will. Only a decade earlier, such an act would have required legislative approval in Virginia.

1George Washington’s dental surgery is mentioned to ___________.

A.show the primitive medical practice in the past.

B.demonstrate the cruelty of slavery in his days.

C.stress the role of slaves in the U.S. history.

D.reveal some unknown aspect of his life.

2What can we learn about Thomas Jefferson?

A.His political view changed his attitude towards slavery.

B.His status as a father made him free the child slaves.

C.His attitude towards slavery was complex.

D.His affair with a slave stained his prestige.

3Which of the following is true according to the text?

A.Some Founding Fathers benefit politically from slavery.

B.Slaves in the old days did not have the right to vote.

C.Slave owners usually had large savings accounts.

D.Slavery was regarded as a peculiar institution.
