  • 26、These “what-ifs” can keep us trapped in a future that does not now and may never exist. 【1】 . These are four tips for dealing with fear of the future.

Outline an intention just for today

An intention for today can help keep your eyes on today. Your intention might be as simple as “I intend to be kind” or “I intend to enjoy my walk”. 【2】

Practice a watchword (口号) to remind yourself of now

A watchword is a word or a phrase that can be repeated to keep you steady. 【3】 . My watchword of this kind is “All I have to deal with is right now”. This helps me when I am confused by things outside my current concerns.

    【4】

Anxiety can be unpleasant. Yet, trying to make ourselves feel less anxious often results in greater anxiety. Giving yourself the freedom to feel this is sometimes necessary to free yourself from an impossible battle.

Set aside a time for planning and seek to keep your worry there

Of course, worrying plays a purpose. 【5】 . There can be a time and a place for that. Setting aside a time for planning can help you set boundaries with your worry, so it can fulfill its duties and you can take part in yours.

    A.This will keep us calm

B.It helps us plan for the future

C.Give yourself time to feel free

    D.Permit yourself to feel anxious

E.Focusing just on this intention narrows you into the present

F.This can be as simple as “love” or as complex as a full sentence

G.This takes away the joy we could be experiencing in the present

  • 27、   Surfing the Internet for fun will make you a better employee, according to an Australian study.

The University of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive than those who do not. Study author Brent Coker said, "Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee's attention."

"People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention," Coker said on the university's website.

"Having a short break, such as a quick surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total Internet attention for a day's work, and as a result, increases productivity (生产效率)," he said.

According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. "Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online," said Coker. "That's not always a good idea."

However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation (适度), or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. "Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a lower productivity than those without." he said.

【1】What does the University of Melbourne study mainly show?

A.People who surf the Internet are good employees.

B.Not everyone surfs the Internet for fun during office hours.

C.Surfing the Internet for fun at times during office hours increases productivity.

D.The Internet is becoming more and more important in people's life.

【2】The underlined word "block" in Paragraph 4 means "______".

    A.organize

    B.separate

    C.protect

    D.stop

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Spending too much time surfing the Internet reduces productivity.

B.Those who never surf the Internet have the lowest productivity.

C.Most people don't surf the Internet in moderation during office hours.

D.People should spend as little time as possible surfing the Internet.

  • 28、Students usually go to school from Monday to Friday. But some schools in the USA are getting shorter weeks. Classes go for four days instead of five.

There are some reasons for this change. School leaders hope longer weekends may give teachers a good rest. And schools could spend less money on buses or electricity.

But is a four-day school week better for students and parents?

Some experts did research to find out the effects. They talked to people about the change. “Some people really like it,” said Christopher Doss, an expert. “Parents get to spend more time with their kids. And they think everyone can be less stressed and sleep more.”

The experts didn’t just want opinions though. They looked at the data. “In fact, we could not find a lot of data to support the parents,” Doss said. Parents did spend more time with their kids. But the study didn’t find that they were less stressed.

The experts also discovered a problem. “We found that kids probably learned a little less every year,” Doss said. “That can add up to a lot less.” So the question is while the change is welcomed, is it worth having kids learn less?

Many students have their own ideas about the change. “I think weeks should be four days,” Chris said. “Every Sunday, I wish for just one more day to prepare for school.” Maya is more in the middle. “I don’t mind a four-day week, but I still like school,” she said. “The bad side is that Tuesday will feel like Monday!”

Are you for a four-day week? Or are you OK with five?

【1】What are the reasons that some schools in the USA are getting shorter weeks?

    ①To save money.

②To give teachers a good rest.

    ③To make parents less stressed.

④To help kids get better prepared for school.

    A.②③

    B.①②

    C.③④

    D.②④

【2】What kind of data did the experts fail to find?

    A.Those to support students’ ideas.

B.Those to support school leaders ‘ideas.

C.Those to show parents were less stressed.

D.Those to show parents spent more time with their children.

【3】What problem did the experts find about the four-day school week?

    A.Students learned less.

    B.Students had busier weekends.

C.Parents had less time to care for their kids.

D.Parents had to learn to teach their kids by themselves.

【4】In which part of a website can we read the text?

    B.Culture.

Several years ago,I was living in New York and working for an airline,so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart,I was sad because I couldn't stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.

When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand feeling my face. "Dad, Merry Christmas!" was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys' faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection(检阅)had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they pulled everything into the center of the living room.

Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts,I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives(侦探)and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages, thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence(存在),for I hadn't been with them during Christmas these years.
