二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in 'Section L'. I found out later that everyone called Section L 'Loserville'. It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!

I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable I was. One night when I was texting with Ana, I complained about another friend who had just done that. Anas texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time, and I had to try to make things better.

The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right!

I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn't, I was still stuck in 'Loserville', and some people were still mean (苛刻) to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.

But what did change was me — I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up to make sets for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!

I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn't so hard anymore. Even though I couldn't change my situation, I could change my attitude — and that made all the difference.

    1'Loserville' is a section for ________.

    A.smart students B.low achievers

    C.class leaders D.new comers

2The writer complained all the time in the new environment because ________.

A.Ana didn’t text back to her B.she was a good student

C.her friends hurt her feelings D.she was unfairly treated

3What made a difference in changing the situation?

A.She managed to go back to Illinois. B.She ended the friendship with Ana.

C.She began to make friends with others. D.She fought back with her classmates.

4The best title for the passage can be ________.

A.Everlasting Friendship B.Say Goodbye to 'Loserville'

C.An Incident at School D.Unhappiness in 'Loserville'

  • 27、When it comes to US middle school science and engineering, girls rule. Girls took the top five prizes at the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS, a competition for middle school students across the country.

The winners were announced (宣布)last month. They were honored for their STEM successes as well as for showing skills in critical thinking, communication, creativity and team-work. In first place was 14-year-old Alaina Gassler. She designed a system to make driving safer by reducing blind spots-the areas that drivers cannot see outside their vehicle (车辆)Gassler developed the technology while in eighth grade.

“She, along with the entire Class of 2019, is already leaders in their fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM),” said Paula Golden, president of the Broadcom Foundation. “These young inventors give every one of us hope for the future.”

The Broadcom MASTERS competition is a project of the Society for Science & the Public. It was set up to encourage young people to attend college and take up jobs in STEM fields. It was open to students in grades 6, 7 and 8 across the country.

This year, all the major awards in the competition went to girls. The top prize winner, Alaina Gassler, says she got the idea for her project after seeing her mother struggle with blind spots in her family’s car. Blind spots lead to many accidentsabout 840, 000 accidents a year nationwide.

Gassler’s system helps drivers see “through” the A-frame pillar (A柱)—the part of the vehicle, in the front, that joins the top and front window. The A-frame pillar is important for safety, and cannot be removed. Gassler used a camera to help drivers look “through” the structure (结构)to see what is blocked. The camera sends video to a device (设备)that shows images on the other side of the pillar. The driver then can “see” what’s in the blind spot.

The young inventor won a $ 25, 000 prize for her invention. She told Popular Mechanics she can make improvements on her device with that money. Gassler said she wants to improve the picture—making it easy to see in any weather, or any time of the day. She also told the magazine she hopes to sell her idea.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

  • 29、Failing Is Better than Not Trying at All

Do you remember the last time you tried something new and failed?【1】Failure is an important part of learning and growing. Don’t immediately give up — try as much as you can. Here are several realizations that can help push you to try more.

【2】You can be filled with thoughts of what could have happened if you had only decided to try. Something good could have happened, and you will never know unless you try.

Sure, there are a lot of uncertainties that come when trying something new. 【3】 However, not every result is unpleasant from doing something. You have to work hard and be patient if you want positive results.

Repeated failures can be very discouraging. But you don’t become a complete loser just because you failed. 【4】Every failure can show what doesn’t work so that you can try something different next time.

Trying something new and different can be risky. Your time and efforts can be wasted when nothing happens. 【5】Some of the most significant gains can only be made by taking risky strategies.

It takes time to achieve success and your goal, but when you have tried everything available and nothing had happened, this is the only time you should give up and stop trying.

    A.If so, don’t worry.

B.So you never know if you can be successful or not.

C.There are several reasons why you may fear failures.

D.However, we won’t know if something fruitful can occur unless we try.

E.Having a solid support system can also help you build confidence in taking risks.

F.An excellent way to help somebody keep moving forward is to treat each failure as a life lesson.

G.Perhaps the most important thing you don’t want to experience from not trying is regret later in your life.
