24、The first time I ever really noticed a disabled person, I was studying in the third grade. I saw some disabled people before, but I never really knew or cared about what those persons went through.
When a new student arrived in my third grade class, I thought it would just be a common student, but this student was different. His name was Derek and he had autism. He sometimes had random outbursts (随意发作) during class and we would stand there, doing nothing because we didn’t know why he was doing that. When he sat down at desk, we would try to get away from him. After class, we would play jokes on each other, imitating (模仿) Derek, and laughing about it.
Then one day, Derek’s mom came to our class and talked with us. She told us that Derek wasn’t just having random outbursts—he was trying to communicate. Then she chose a volunteer and filled that person’s mouth with soft sweets. When we found the volunteer had great trouble in trying to speak, the mother explained that was what Derek was going through every day. We all understood her meaning.
After this talk, no one tried to make fun of Derek or run away from him. We accepted his outbursts in class and he became one of our friends. Having a class with Derek has taught me to have an open mind to those who are different from us. My experience in having an autistic classmate has provided me with a good lesson.

26、Sometimes, you just can’t help it. Maybe you’re watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Why do people cry? What are tears (眼泪)? Scientists are working hard to find the answers to these questions.
Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology (心理学) at Tilburg University, in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who has studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types (类型) of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “They are connected with our feelings,” explains Vingerboets. “Especially when we feel helpless.”
Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. “Humans are very complex (复杂的),” says Lauren Bylsma, a professor from the USA. “It seems that tears serve to get help and support from others.” She says another reason we cry is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time for humans to grow up.
Vingerhoets ________. “I think that the reason why humans cry has to do with our long childhood.” he says. “That’s the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. Tears were a safer way to be noticed by others. In this case, it is better to use a silent signal to ask for help,” he says.
Vingerhoets and Bylsma do lots of studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Bylsma, there is still much more to discover. “It’s surprising.” she says, “how much we still don’t know.”
