21、An entire industry has been built upon the assumption that image is everything, but when it comes to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no substance(事实)behind the image, the product, service or person will fail eventually.
First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services.Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection.Public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal(丑闻)showed that behind that image, it cheated in business practices.Despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit.Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality, behind the image has led to the downfall of the word-famous accounting firm.
Similarly, personal advisers can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars.Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.
To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the “selling” of a person. But image is only half of the equation(等式).What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself—the person or product must deliver truth on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.

22、 Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said yesterday he would use the autumn spending review to increase Britain’s £12bn-a-year aid budget towards humanitarian(人道主义的) causes in the wake of the European refugee(难民) crisis.
Britain promised to spend 0.7 percent of state general product on aid, meaning the budget could rise sharply by the end of the decade as the economy grows.
Mr Osborne also said more of the aid budget could be given to help local government with housing costs for incomers, without breaking international guidelines.
“We will use the foreign aid budget to help with the costs of these refugees. People ask about the pressure on public services; we’ll have extra money to help with that.”
The government was unable to give a figure for how much aid money could be handed to local authorities: it would depend on how many refugees are accepted.
David Cameron, Prime Minister, will set out his position on aid for refugees today. It is reported that Britain will accept at least 10,000 extra people from camps on the Syria border. He will use a statement in the House of Commons to flesh out plans — announced in Madrid on Friday — to take more people.
A report in The Sunday Times that the UK would take 15,000 Syrians, not far from the 18,000 figure demanded by the EU, was described by “Downing Street” as a “guess”.
The UK will offer to resettle Syrians directly from refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey — but not those who have already reached the EU.

D.Britain can hold 15,000 refugees at most.
23、Now, let’s talk about earthquakes on our planet. Some countries have large numbers of earthquakes. Japan is one of them. Others do not have many. For example, there are few earthquakes in Britain. There is often a great noise during an earthquake. The ground vibrates (震动). Houses fall down. Trains run off the lines. Sometimes, there is a heavy loss of human lives.
Earthquakes often happen near volcanoes, but this is not always true. The centers of some earthquakes are under the sea. The bottom of the sea suddenly moves. The powerful forces inside the earth break the rocks. The coast is shaken and great waves appear. These waves, also known as seismic waves(地震波), or tsunamis(海啸) can travel long distances and rush over the land when they reach it. They are strong enough to break down houses and other buildings. Very often fires follow the most serious earthquakes. In 1906, the numbers of fires were burning in the city. The water pipes were also shaken and broken, so it was not possible to put the fire out. There was no water. The Tokyo Earthquake of 1923 happened just before noon. People were cooking meals on their fires at that time. When the ground shook, the fires shook, too. Hot materials were thrown on the different parts of the houses, some of which were made of wood. Soon 134 fires were burning in the city.
What kind of building stands up best in an earthquake? A building with concrete walls is perhaps the best. A steel frame will make it even stronger. The frame holds the different parts together and the walls so not easily fall. There is less chance of fire because concrete and steel do not burn. Over the years, scientists studied the results of the earthquake in different parts of the world, and they are convinced that this kind of building is the safest.

A.A building with concrete walls and a steel frame stands up best in an earthquake.

D.A steel frame has no help in making the house stronger.

24、Courtesy in English
Courtesy (礼貌) is an art form that shows our moral character. China's history is one of a civilization (文明) with a highly developed sense of etiquette (礼仪) ; therefore, we should speak English as politely as possible when we go abroad.
Ordering meals
【1】 Beginning your request with “May I...?” “Could I...?” is considered polite. For example, “May I have a latte?” It is also politer to say, “I’ll have...” or “I’d like...” instead of “I want...” because it will be considered as less direct.
Asking for help
If we need to ask someone for help, we should say, “Excuse me, or Do you mind if I ask you something?”【2】 Instead, for example, we should say, “Could you tell me where the rest rooms are?”
【3】
Local people in other countries sometimes speak really fast, so it can be hard for us to catch all the words. In such a situation, we can say, “Pardon me?” to ask them to repeat what they said. In my opinion, saying “Can you please repeat that? I didn't follow.” is the politest way.
Refusing an invitation
【4】If we really can't make it, we can first say, “I’d like to ...” and then say, “but I have to work late”, for example. Or “I’m afraid I can't...”, or even, “That sounds great, but ...”
Expressing disagreement
We can use sentences like “I see what you're saying, but I think...”,or “You could be right, but don't forget that...” or even, “Yes, that's true, but I'm not sure that...”【5】
A. Can't catch what's been said?
B. We should not ask our questions directly.
C. Being polite when you order something is very important.
D. Do you know some basic rules of answering the telephone?
E. It is also important to know how to refuse someone’s invitation.
F. “Please” and “thank you” go a long way when we speak to each other.
G. These are great ways to express disagreement politely by being less direct.
